Working according to core values

“In my entire professional career I have focused on 5 important core values,
this is exactly what I want to continue to do for my consulting clients.”

Taking responsibility

As a manager, I think that this is one of the most important values. You are ultimately responsible for many people. “It wasn’t my fault” should never be used as an excuse by a manager, only the end result matters.

In assignments for my clients, I find that supporting the management is of great importance. I am aware of their ultimate responsibility and I want to give them the tools to make it happen.

When I was a general manager myself, I generally didn’t find it difficult to separate blah blah from valuable information. I want to continue to apply this test to myself.

Identifying, radiating and shaping the vision

Continually looking at what the future can bring, based on a thorough analysis of what is happening today, is a very important role of a manager. If you see what’s coming, you can anticipate in time. The slogan: “we do not believe in luck”, but in “anticipation meets opportunity” is for me a way of life.

Doing or summarizing market analyses, performing competitive analyses, SWOT analyses of your own company, facilitating a meeting on these topics with a large group of managers, this is something that I really enjoy doing and that I have already done a lot.

A long-term vision or plan doesn’t have to be lenghty. The greater the industry knowledge on which it is based, the shorter and more powerful the plan can be. The strongest plans I’ve ever seen or helped determine were on a few A4s.

Growing people

“Give them water and light, and let them bloom”. This saying about flowers also applies to our employees. It always has been, but in today’s tight job market, it’s even more essential to allow you to keep your good people.

This is a specialized topic, which I can’t really give advice on. However, I have seen many companies where it is poorly handled, and some that achieved good results with it. I also quickly recognize situations where talents are misunderstood. After all, company floors are littered with prejudices about people and because of this, a lot of talent is wasted.

Optimizing processes, and letting them live

Process optimization is the basis of good business operations. Smooth processes, with a correct dose of documentation but mainly with several measurements or KPIs, communication and training, are the basis for happy employees and satisfied customers

Making an ISO 9001 system live can be a very good way to optimize processes. Unfortunately, I notice that many CEOs do not really know the ISO9001 standard. Quality issues often involve the traditional initiatives such as laying off people or introducing new IT programs, whereas supporting middle management in process optimisation is the key to success.

Embracing technology

The use of technology drives the economy and distinguishes the strong from the weak players. Dealing with this as managers is the key to success, but at the same time it is one of the biggest challenges.

Choosing the right IT system is absolutely very important. Good project management is here essential to achieve a good result. A second criterion is finding the right IT partner, in-house or externally, although my experience indicates that you are a sitting duck, if you do not have a strong IT core within your company.
